BMT Expands Role in Australian Navy Communications with SEA1442 Phase 5

We continue our strategic partnering with Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) to deliver the Maritime Warfighter Network for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) under SEA1442 Phase 5. This next-generation communications system will enhance and modernise fleet connectivity, interoperability, and operational resilience across the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

Building on our successful system trials in 2022 and 2023, our extended role in SEA1442 Phase 5 underscores our commitment to seamless integration of advanced naval communications. The programme will deliver a resilient, future-proof networking system, ensuring seamless connectivity between ships, joint forces, and coalition partners - without the need or constraint of routing all communication paths back to Australia. The implementation of this programme will lead to faster decision-making, enhanced situational awareness and reduced communication bottlenecks for the ADF.

Further strengthening our sovereign maritime capability, this initiative aligns with our recent acquisition of Australian Maritime Technologies (AMT). The acquisition enhances our in-country expertise, strengthening our position as a leading provider of maritime engineering services, ship sustainment programmes, and complex military platform integration. This expanded capability enables us to deliver end-to-end engineering, integration, and lifecycle support, ensuring the RAN benefits from a robust, future-ready communications network.

Murray Brabrook, Joint Systems Director at Boeing Defence Australia (BDA), commented:

“Boeing Defence Australia’s Maritime Warfighter Network is set to transform the Royal Australian Navy’s operational communications by delivering a highly resilient, interoperable, and future-ready network. Our collaboration with BMT brings together world-class expertise in maritime systems integration, ensuring that the network is not only robust and adaptable but also seamlessly integrated into the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet.
By leveraging BMT’s experience in naval sustainment and complex platform engineering, we are positioned to accelerate delivery of a mature, low-risk solution that strengthens Navy’s ability to operate as an integrated force across joint and coalition operations.”
"This project reinforces our commitment to partnering with Boeing Defence Australia to advance, de-risk, and enhance the resilience and readiness of this capability for the Navy customer and its allied partners," said Graeme Nayler, Regional Business Director, APAC, BMT.

Accelerating Delivery of a Modern, Resilient Fleet Network

Our long-standing expertise in maritime integration, naval communications, and lifecycle sustainment positions us to play a critical role in SEA1442 Phase 5. By ensuring seamless system performance across all eight ships under contract, leveraging our expanded Australian-based maritime engineering capability, and optimising communications for harsh maritime environments, we are driving the resilience and adaptability of the RAN’s fleet.

SEA1442 Phase 5 represents a critical step in modernising the RAN’s digital battlespace, enhancing connectivity, interoperability, and operational effectiveness. The organisation’s expertise in naval sustainment will also support the long-term evolution of the network, ensuring it remains future-ready as operational requirements continue to evolve.

We remain committed to delivering assured sovereign technology and naval solutions, reinforcing Australia’s defence industry, shipbuilding expertise, and naval sustainment capability.
