Defence - Ships

We help defence procurement agencies and naval headquarters with the design, acquisition and maintenance of safe, capable and available warships and auxiliaries.

All the skills and capabilities, in one place, to support the timely delivery of innovative solutions to complex naval challenges

A strong maritime force is imperative for protecting a nation’s interests, people, trade, and territories. With an increasingly turbulent geopolitical climate, funding pressures and a reliance on older ships while new ships are in production – a rapid and timely programme of modernisation and growth, including new ships with increased lethality and cutting-edge technology, is needed for navies to maintain their leading edge.

We help customers involved in ships acquisition and support, with our expertise spanning all pre-concept, concept, assessment and manufacture phases of naval and auxiliary ship designs, as well as playing a vital part in all maintenance, upkeep, update, life extension, complex problem-solving and disposal.

Working at platform, system and equipment levels, across all organisations, we take pride in our role as a trusted partner to the Ships domain, providing engineering and consultancy services to UK Project Teams across DE&S’ Operating Centres and supporting Agencies including the Submarine Delivery Agency, the Defence Safety Agency and Dstl. BMT is part of the Aurora Engineering Partnership, the Engineering Delivery Partner (EDP) for DE&S Engineering Services. Under the EDP contract, one of the key programmes we lead is the delivery of critical engineering services to the UK MOD’s maritime domain and the teams supporting complex warships.

Customer advisory

From concept and design through to in-service support, we provide trusted engineering consultancy for national governments on their naval procurement programmes. This includes helping to define specifications for requirements for maritime assets and reviewing evolving designs. Our progressive approach to ship design sees us integrate new technologies such as energy-saving systems, emission-reducing solutions, and provisions for future fuels – we are committed to delivering cutting edge innovations to meet the evolving demands of naval operations.

Support engineering

We provide scalable Support Engineering solutions to ensure that ship designs are optimised for support activities, with extensive experience in the development of through-life support packages. Our consultant engineers can work as an embedded part of any design team to ensure that new equipment takes through life supportability into account. We can also help to enhance existing capability or extend the role of existing assets beyond their original design life.

Digital & synthetic training services

Synthetic training enables efficient and effective platform and site familiarisation; a virtual platform can be created before it is built in the real world, enabling reduced time and costs for onboarding. We develop immersive training where realism based on real-world assets and structures is essential. We perform a Training Needs Analysis on your problems to deliver the most effective and appropriate training outcomes. Our 3D virtual environments replicate real-world locations and objects, from tools and equipment through to full structures including ships. Delivered across a range of hardware, we can provide the most appropriate solution for your training needs – be it a PC with mouse and a keyboard, or a head-mounted display such as a VR headset.

Programme management

For those involved in specifying, delivering or managing future programmes, there are many complexities to be considered: making sure change initiatives are effective and deliver enduring value; demonstrating value for money when faced with continual budgetary pressures; managing risk, and ensuring acquisitions are fit for purpose to name a few. With an in-depth understanding of programme management methods and principles for complex, high-value naval programmes, our experts are adept at ensuring the delivery of programmes on time, on budget, and to quality – whilst ensuring the seamless integration of all programme facets, such as scheduling, procurement, and production engineering.

Environmental services

We support our Ships defence customers with a wide variety of projects, working alongside consultants and engineers to provide environmental management services which help you to identify solutions for a wide range of environmental challenges. We help with environmental impact assessments, environmental management planning and reporting, risk assessments, environmental legislation compliance reviews to name a few.
